Lea Katherine Thompson

Thompson was born on May 31, 1961, in Rochester, Minnesota,[ one of five children of Clifford Thompson and Barbara Barry Thompson, a musician. Thompson is the sister of Coleen Goodrich and Shannon Katona as well as two brothers, Andrew and Barry. Her mother is of Irish descent. She was a ballet student as a girl and danced professionally by 14, securing scholarships to San Francisco Ballet, the Pennsylvania Ballet, and the American Ballet Theatre. When she was 20 years young and had started her professional career with American Ballet Theatre's Studio Company (then known as ABT II), the time was right to make a decision on whether she would move to the company's main stage. Mikhail Baryshnikov (the artistic director at the time) said to her that she was a great dancer, but she was too bulky. This was her "epiphany" in which she revealed that this was the moment that made me choose to stop dancing and quit being a ballet dancer. It was a truly memorable event. If it wasn't for that, I would have been smashing my head into the wall for another 10or more years. "[She switched to acting. She moved to New York at the age of 20 and appeared in a variety of Burger King commercials in the 1980s with Sarah Michelle Gellar. Her co-star in Back to the Future Part II was Elisabeth Shue. and her first movie in 1983, in Jaws 3D. She recalled the film as "the the first film I've ever watched, but I lied and said I'd been in some other films and when I turned up, I had practically nothing. In addition, I'd said that I knew how to water ski. I didn't. Since I was required to participate in the Sea World water-skiing program, I had just five days to master water-skiing skills. I don't even have the ability to swim!" This was followed with All the Right Moves (1983) and Red Dawn(84) and as well as The Wild Life (1984).
