Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay started to discover her creative and artistic side when she was a young girl due to her aunt Denise. The aunt she had was a nurse and did night shifts to ensure that she could devote her day to literature, theatre, and art. DuVernay was introduced to the 1961 movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was taught by her mother that art can be used as a tool for activism. Similar to DuVernay's mom, she was socially conscious and taught that she could express her thoughts through the art of. DuVernay spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama, where the father of DuVernay was born and was raised. Her father was awed by the historical civil rights marches through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the adjacent town Selma Alabama. Her summers in Alabama's Selma would influence her later on to create a film about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay obtained her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. Upon graduation, DuVernay studied in the University of California Los Angeles and graduated with degrees in English as well as African American study. DuVernay began to produce in broadcast journalism when she was in her university. DuVernay was a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay was assigned to the look-out and search for the house of a particular Jury member. In the course of her duties, she became dissatisfied with journalism and moved into the publicity business. DuVernay was hired right from college to be an assistant publicist in an unassuming studio. Her own Public Relations company, The DuVernay Agency was founded in 1999. Apart from PR, the agency created several lifestyle networks like Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
